Also, for a guy in his situation to be dating hot girls is pretty damn cool. The 1-10 number thing is more about male sexual panic than anything else. It took me forever, but once I finally got more comfortable with sex (internalized that it would go okay often enough that I didn't fear it), I could finally tune into that faint internal radio station that was telling me who I was really attracted to. (Often completely unrelated to what is marketed to us as sexy.) Before that, all I could hear was the noise yelling at me to pursue women other men might value so I could "keep up." A wacky, nutty, doomed approach -- yet exactly the M.O. Mystery is describing. By the way, I was once 12" from Rebecca Romijn (got up from my seat at Sushi Mon, turned around and she was standing behind me waiting for my seat). And you know what? On that night, SHE wasn't a 10. I also once was at the Westwood Coffee Bean on Gayley (the one nearest UCLA) and saw Cindy Crawford in line. And yeah, she looked good, but I realized that, with the place jammed cheek by jowl with UCLA coeds -- Cindy Crawford wasn't even the fifth-hottest girl in the room! So, fuck the 10-scale.
