Gosh, when I left the military I felt competely lost. I had only been in four years, but I had a clear self identity a clear purpose, I knew what I had to do each day. I had pride, self-respect and a little rank.

Adjusting to civilian life was terrible, meaningless with nothing to work for, on the bottom of society. It was truly horrible.

What about loss?

The opposite of love is loss.

When you are attached to something with passion and you lose it does that mean you lost your identity and purpose?

Hey Cameron,

I've been thinking about this identity/purpose thing a lot too, and there are several ways this can be interpreted.

I'm curious, do you think that someone should have a specific goal-oriented identity and purpose, or should it be more dynamic?

A few examples of what you would call "valid" purposes would be nice to see either here or in a future article.

Also, do you consider the Secret and new age self help stuff beneficial in moderation, or do you think it's a bad idea altogether.

Thanks man,

Nice article, Cameron.

I find that removing layers of "identity" is often more helpful than having a fixed identity. So many people are walking around with identities that they're attached to because of it feeling familiar but that are no longer serving them, such as the "identity" of being the guy with no friends or no life. It's actually hard for these guys to let that go because, for many, it's all they know, and the unknown is very scary.

My only purpose is forgiveness, but that's a longer comment ;-)
