On another note, this reminds me of Arnold again. If my memory serve me, back when arnold first got elected, several women accused him of raping those women. It went on for a few weeks.

I think he straightup denies it or apologize for it for a little bit.

Then one time at a press conference where he spend 99 percent talking about how he's going to govern california. One of the news reporter said "what do you think of the so and so rape case". Arnold barely glance at the reporter and said "old news". lol

So, my question is, that if you’re being charismatic, until what point can you get away with almost anything and people tend to forgive you very easily? For example, lets take Tommy Lee......</blockquote>

Hey Ricardo,

I don't think it's so much "Getting Away" with anything as it is that people are more accepting of that person's way of being.

Certainly people who are charismatic are given more leeway but it's that they also have a certain way of living and are congruent with that.

I think you may have the wrong impression of O.J. in America. Most Americans never forgave him for it. People are willing to accept a lot, but can't really overlook actions that leave victims behind such as cold-blooded murder or pedophilia (in case of MJ).

Guys like Tommy Lee, or Charlie Sheen haven't done such things. They live their life a certain way, and are congruent with it. Most people who come across them seem to think they're not bad guys.

 -------
Casandra,

Your personal agenda is so strong that you completely missed the humor aspect of that word & the context it was used in.

Don't tell me you slept with Tiger Woods too? Very touchy on this topic.

Matt,

Yeah, it's all very ridiculous. I wonder when there'll come a day where we'll have a "Divorced" President, or perhaps one that has a girlfriend who lives with him, instead of the charade that he is part of a married team.

Thanks for the feedback,
Got another article coming up about society, and social behavior which you're going to really dig. This time it's about GURUS...

Great analysis!

Also i must agree 100% to what "European" said (i am german).

This hole thing is an american cultural phenomen: it starts with the strange need of the american public that someone has to apologize in public about private things that nobody should care exept the people involved and ends with the scary idea to make a "hockey mum" to the vice president of the united states ;).

I guess the majority of europeen leaders would have no chance to run for a local mayor-job: the last german chancler was married 3 times, i guess the last 10 french presidents where married and had girlfriends all the time, and the italien president Berlusconi - well i guess this guy spent more money on whores in his live than all the readers in this blog together (but i guess his IQ is higher than Sarah Palins and George W.´s combined, haha)

But well, different countries, different cultures. You americans have a strange need to feel that people in public have to be "better persons in moral categories", even if these moral categories are from the 18th century.

Maybe this has to do with the fact that lot of settlers who immigrated 300 years ago from europe where pilgrims?

My dictionary defines the word slut as "a slovenly woman. A promiscuous woman." (I had to look up sloven and it means untidy) What is the equivalent term for a man? Pick up artist? I'd say that because there is not an equivalent term for men that we must use the same term used for women to describe men whose actions are the equivalent. Fair is fair. Therefore, Tiger Woods didn't just date sluts, he IS a slut and should have called himself one.
Cameron, certainly you've been quite the "slut" at times in your life. Cameron, are you in a monogamous relationship these days and promoting monogamy or are you still quite the slut yourself? How many sex partners at any given time or over a year makes a man or a woman a slut? (probably you have a different definition of slut I'm guessing)
Here is a definition to consider. There is a book by Dossey Easton called "The Ethical Slut." It redefines the word slut as the following. "a slut is a person of any gender who has the courage to lead life according to the radical proposition that sex is nice and pleasure is good for you."

Been reader of your blog for quite a time now and it's a great article as usual, thanks man.

Reading this made me think about not-so-similar situation, but the murder case of OJ Simpson. He was definetely very charismatic, and if i remember correctly, after this case he was still relatively likable figure and i suppose, popular amongst women. So, my question is, that if you're being charismatic, until what point can you get away with almost anything and people tend to forgive you very easily? For example, lets take Tommy Lee: after being in jail for beating his wife back then, Pamela Anderson, people still kinda had this "he's a rockstar and this kind of stuff comes with this status"-attitude towards him. I've read Tommy's book and he seems like a nice guy, so it's easy to see, why the American (Motley Crue is not so known here as in the States) crowd likes him.

If you find some time to give us your thoughts and maybe some other real-life examples (OJ and Tommy Lee were just the first ones who came in mind, probably there are many more) that would be awesome!

Take care and greetings from Northern Europe!

Mojito,

Perhaps there is more than meets the eye, but then again, we live in a society where people have the need to send twitter messages about what they just ate for lunch.

So people aren’t all that sophisticated. They just want entertainment at any cost, and Tiger-Woods drama provides that in between breaks between crappy reality-TV shows.

European guy,

I know Europeans don’t understand why this stuff is a big deal (and rightly so.) You know, Tiger woods has made about a billion dollars in income in his career (may become half after a divorce.) Even if he never made another dime off of his corporate sponsors, he’d still make good money from playing Golf and winning tournaments.

Part of me is curious to see what would have happened if he had come out with a more ballsy attitude, basically saying, “Yes, I fucked up. Cheated on my wife with random sluts. Now I have to repair this with my wife. I am getting back to doing what I do best. Thanks for your understanding. See you on the golf course.”

Instead he treated it like it was a matter of national security. He actually made it into a bigger deal. My hunch is that it's all about the money. He wants his sponsors back to pay him $$$$$ for advertising their products.

My european mind cannot understand why the public in general requires, (no, demands!) an explanation and an apology.

Seriously, what to people care?

He is a good golfer who fucks girls. Big thing. He is not a president who may be "distracted" by his affairs. Basically whoever he fucks should be his private thing.

And yet he actually agreed to go through that humiliating show. Hell, if I was him I'd take my millions of dollars and with no apologys keep playing golf.

It's the absurdity of morally stoning a public figure what amazes me. Really, who gives a shit? Seems the american viewer does. This tells us something about the inner deamons and frustrations of the average american.

Good article, by the way.

Nice comparison with Clinton.

What I think is amazing in these situations is how much these situations touch people, even amidst all the disaster going on, which one would guess is more important. I mean, if people spend so much time and energy discussing and following Tiger's case, it surely means that there's much more to it than initially meets the eye. It's surely not that people are just stupid.

In my opinion a lot of this interest and resentment comes from the dirty truth that humans (men and women) for the most part will, at some point, desire more than one sexual partner. Because we're taught to botte it up and not admit that it's natural we probably take some of our guilt and anger out on public figures like Tiger.

Did you ever read the book "Women's infidelity"? Opened my eyes quite a bit to the reality men and women face when it comes to infidelity.
