\u00a0The Guru Epidemic – Self Help Industry- Part 2<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

\u00a0 In the last article, The Guru Epidemic, I talked about the behavior of most Gurus and their Modus Operandi.\u00a0 Someone unfamiliar, (or even familiar) with self-help gurus and teachers of enlightenment may natually wonder: WHY do people take refuge in gurus?<\/p>\n

  • SO WHY DO SO MANY PEOPLE GO TO GURUS?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \u00a0Come on Cameron.\u00a0 The picture you paint is not very flattering.\u00a0 Why would people worship these individuals?<\/em><\/p>\n

    Well, I\u2019ll share a quick story that may help you see this dynamic from another perspective.<\/p>\n

    A gentleman by the name of David DeAngelo has been giving Dating advice online since about 2001.\u00a0 He has countless DVDs, seminars, and audio products on dating advice.\u00a0 You probably have heard of\u00a0him.\u00a0 \u00a0 2 years ago,\u00a0“David DeAngelo”\u00a0decided to give seminars on marketing under his real name Eben Pagen.<\/p>\n

    \u00a0Yet, some of the same people<\/span> who attended his dating<\/span> seminars, STILL chose to willingly attend his marketing seminars<\/span> though they had zero interest in learning about Internet Marketing\u00a0\u00a0 A very analytical friend of mine was about to lose his mind.\u00a0\u00a0As though he were “Rainman” on\u00a0uppers, he\u00a0kept repeating,\u00a0 \u201cBut I don\u2019t get it!\u00a0 They\u2019re looking for dating advice.\u00a0 This is a marketing seminar!\u00a0 Why are they paying<\/span> 5000 Dollars to see this guy speak about marketing when they want DATING advice? Why, why, why???\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

    To which I replied:<\/p>\n

    \u201cYou\u2019re not getting it emotionally.\u00a0 That\u2019s Daddy<\/strong> up there!\u00a0 That\u2019s their father on stage<\/span>!!!<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s why they\u2019re there, a chance to see daddy one more time\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    \u00a0<\/p>\n

    There you have it!\u00a0 The guru relationships.\u00a0 Most subjects, specially in the DATING FIELD, (I don\u2019t know if this\u2019d apply in the financial-advice field for example) are NOT EVEN SEEKING ADVICE.\u00a0 THEY\u2019RE LOOKING FOR A FATHER amidst these gurus.<\/p>\n

    Guru is not your father<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

    \u00a0<\/p>\n

    \u00a0The over-bearing guru who has all of the answers represents a father-figure most guys\u00a0 at that seminar have not had.\u00a0 Maybe they had fathers who were meek, or perhaps their dad was never around. In these modern times, people are missing father figures, and hence, they seek to fill that void through finding gurus who can tell them what to do, give them direction, and tough love.\u00a0 (To be fair, David D never signed up for this.\u00a0 However, there are plenty of \u201cGurus who relish in taking this role and do take advantage of it).<\/p>\n

    \u00a0I think if you had a father who was a masculine figure, a man’s man, who spent time with you when you were a kid, you’d have a hard time ending up in the guru-worshipping circles.\u00a0 You could even get sucked in for a short while perhaps, but you’d snap out of it quickly.\u00a0 \u00a0A lack of a strong caring father figure is a common trend you’d find as the common element in the guru worhippers.<\/p>\n

    \u00a0I should add that I am not condemning anyone for going to a seminar to improve on anything, whether it’s financial advice, or how to be a better Tennis player weekend crashcourse.\u00a0 Being progressive is a great attribute.\u00a0 However, when the knack for being for being progressive is replaced by a need for a father figure\/guru who influences your every decision, you’ve crossed\u00a0 on over into a slippery slope.<\/p>\n

    \u00a0Would you like to be\u00a0horrified for a bit?\u00a0\u00a0 This will only take you 10 minutes and save your hours of time from having to watch another shitty “Saw” movie.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Stick your head in \u201cTony Robbins Forums\u201d for 10 minutes and be sure to \u00a0have a vomit-bucket close by.\u00a0 You\u2019ll find people who can\u2019t figure out what to do for exercise, or what to eat for breakfast, or how to tie\u00a0on their shoelaces\u00a0without Tony Robins telling them\u00a0the proper way\u00a0to do it.\u00a0 Again, Tony seems like a nice guy.\u00a0 I don’t know that he set out to do this, but it’s bound to happen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    \u00a0If you happen to be one of these people and can identify with the above people, then maybe you should look into getting your issues fixed.\u00a0\u00a0 Most people assume \u201cGurus\u201d to be a notch, (or two or three notches) above average normal people.\u00a0 The ultimate irony is that most gurus are a notch (or two or three) BELOW normal average people. (For reasons mentioned above, and trust me, I’ve spent enough time with self proclaimed gurus.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

    \u00a0 If you want to learn to better social skills, and learn more about attracting women, then yes, learn from me. Get my audio course.\u00a0 If you want to read more good stuff, then learn from \u201cStephen Nash\u201d or \u201cSinn\u201d.\u00a0 If you want to learn the piano, then hire a piano-teacher, and if you want to learn to play basketball better, then hire the proper basketball coach.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    There are some people who don\u2019t sign up to be a guru, but end up being one by default because they\u2019re such strong masculine figures.\u00a0 My buddy Steve P. probably falls under that category but it doesn\u2019t change the fact that he does great work to create change through hypno-therapy.\u00a0 Steve is also a guy you can hang with, talk about movies, business, or MMA.\u00a0 There are rare exceptions as I mentioned.<\/p>\n

    If you\u2019re looking for a guru to be your father, then you\u2019ll have to address that on your own.\u00a0 I have enough understanding of social behaviors and dynamics to take full advantage of people seeking fathers, but it\u2019s not my style.\u00a0 It\u2019s not who I am.\u00a0 I\u2019ll leave that to the guys who have all of the answers, who occasionally carry an Asian assistant behind them.\u00a0 (I’m telling you: Look for the crony walking behind.)<\/p>\n

    \u00a0Then how will you know when you have arrived?\u00a0 How will you know when you\u2019ve had enough seminars to become enlightened?\u00a0 How is anyone ever suppose to really know?\u00a0 You know when you know!\u00a0 (A truly guru-esque answer, btw. Thank you!)\u00a0\u00a0 You know when you\u2019ve arrived at that point when you know what want to do, and now it\u2019s a matter of doing it.\u00a0 You start exploring the how, and by that I mean, you start exploring what specific actions you have to take.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    \u00a0Study those who are successful in that endeavor.\u00a0 They know what they wanted to do, and then started doing it. Sometimes, it took them a while to get their act together, and if they\u2019re famous, there maybe a mug-shot of them on some Internet website just for laughs. Sometimes it takes a few years to figure out your \u201cStuff\u201d and along the way, you may stop at a few seminars, and read some books.\u00a0 You\u2019ll figure out and you\u2019ll know you\u2019ve arrived when you know that you don\u2019t need any gurus anymore\u2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    \u00a0I believe\u00a0that gurus are only building on the same psychological principles that were started 1000s of years ago with the advents of prophets.\u00a0\u00a0 Whether it was\u00a0Moses, Jesus or Muhammad, these individuals recognized that probably a good\u00a080% of the population desperately needed a figurehead to give them answers, without which, they could not find purpose!\u00a0 (<\/span>This theme of Purpose & Identity is so ever recurring.)<\/span><\/em> So these clever individuals took on that role.\u00a0 Seriosuly, could you other wise sell that story about a guy living inside a whale?\u00a0\u00a0But let’s get back to the modern day gurus…\u00a0<\/p>\n

    \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ultimately, you learn that no human being has ALL of the answers.\u00a0 A little spirituality is good, but still, no person (or team of persons) has all of the answers.\u00a0 Those who achieve great things have a drive that comes from within and they have a certain strength that they\u2019re going to push forward.\u00a0 This sense of achievement is not always material or financial.\u00a0\u00a0 Sometimes, it\u2019s a simple story about an individual who had to learn to walk again after being told by doctors that he would not be able to ever walk again following a tragic accident.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    \u00a0It\u2019s having the confidence in yourself that you\u2019re going to get it done, and you shall find a way to do so.<\/em>\u00a0 Along the way, you\u2019re going to learn a few things, including things about yourself, and certainly, there will be people\/family\/friends\/coaches\/teachers\/professors who will contribute to this endeavor.<\/p>\n

    \u00a0Or so that is my finding.\u00a0<\/p>\n
